Because of his 25 years’ work advancing knowledge about the function and structure of proteins, Dr. Vassylyev is a widely-recognized academic expert in protein crystallography. Focusing on structural and functional studies of transcription and its regulation, he has also contributed substantial effort in developing advanced, novel approaches in the expression and purification of complex biological systems.

Vassylyev joined The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 2005 as Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics. It was here that he developed a novel method to improve the purification of complex proteins when he couldn’t obtain the high-purity and yield he needed with commercially-available methods.

Vassylyev earned a Ph.D. from the Institute of Molecular Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (Moscow) in 1992.

He was previously Senior Research Scientist and Group Leader with RIKEN Harima Institute in Harima, Japan, and also held senior research posts with the International Institute for Advanced Research in Kyoto, and the Biomolecular Engineering Research Institute following his post-doctoral training at the Protein Engineering Institute in Osaka, Japan.

He has been an invited speaker at more than 25 international conferences, and authored 88 peer-reviewed scientific publications—including 10 in the highly-prestigious journal Nature. He is a reviewer for the scientific journals Nature, Science, Nature Communications, Cell, Molecular Cell, EMBO Journal, Journal of Molecular Biology, and Acta Crystallographica
